Excess cerebrospinal fluid can build up in the brain's ventricles, which are fluid-filled cavities, leading to hydrocephalus. The phrase originates from the Greek words "hydrocephalus" and "cephalus," which both denote the head. Translated as "water on the brain," the term really refers to the build-up of cerebrospinal fluid, an organic liquid that is transparent and covers the brain and spinal cord.It is unclear what causes hydrocephalus in humans. Certain forms of hydrocephalus only show up in children or adults, whilst others are present from birth. Hydrocephalus can be brought on by brain tumors, head trauma, haemorrhages, or infections like meningitis. It may also be caused by any of the aforementioned factors, be inherited genetically, or be connected to developmental issues like spina bifida or encephalocele.
