A stroke is a sudden disruption of continuous blood flow to the brain that results in neurological function loss. Blood flow can be interrupted by a blockage, resulting in the more common ischemic stroke, or by bleeding in the brain, resulting in the more lethal hemorrhagic stroke. Ischemic stroke accounts for approximately 87 per cent of all stroke cases. Stroke frequently strikes with little or no warning, and the consequences can be disastrous. Adequate blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain must be restored as quickly as possible. Without oxygen and essential nutrients, the affected brain cells are either injured or die in a matter of minutes. When brain cells die, they do not recover and can cause catastrophic damage.
