Excess cerebrospinal fluid can collect in the fluid-filled cavities or ventricles of the brain, resulting in hydrocephalus. The phrase is derived from the Greek words "hydrocephalus" and "cephalus," which both mean "head." The expression, which literally means "water on the brain," refers to a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid, a clear organic liquid that coats the brain and spinal cord. The causes of hydrocephalus are not well understood. Some varieties of hydrocephalus arise from birth, whereas others appear only in children or adults. Hydrocephalus can be caused by brain tumors, head injuries, hemorrhages, or infections such as meningitis. It can also be inherited genetically, be associated with developmental issues such as spina bifida or encephalocele, or be the outcome of any of the aforementioned. Hydrocephalus can be fatal.
